After receiving an advanced degree in archaeology and traveling the world, Richard started a small farm in rural Oregon with his wife Kate where they participate annually in a CSA program, mentor aspiring farmers through a mentor program, and raise their special-needs daughter. These people are an inspiration. Hayhurst Farm has served the Lane & Douglas Co. Oregon area for 16 years, providing healthy food and organic garden starts. All their plants and vegetables are grown using organic practices developed for the Lane & Douglas County bioregion during their 30 years in local agriculture.

John agrees with the President that we need to get up and dust ourselves off, take responsibility for each other and for ourselves. We must foster change from the “roots-up”. By providing an example of a working vegetable garden on the White House lawn, the First Familiy will show that everyone can turn their piece of turf into a place of beauty and production of food. John is a hard working, talented “plants” person who has experience teaching at the Santa Cruz Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, managed production of a 3-acre kitchen garden in Tuscany, was a VISTA volunteer for the Sacramento City/County Hunger Commission, the assistant manager of the Rancho Sandia in Chio CA, and managed greenhouse and nursery vegetable propagationat the Center for LandBased Learning in Winters, CA.
